18th – Derby County v Notts Forest Post Match
As we walked back to the car last night, I lamented to everyone that I had to write this post match report and openly asked “anyone got any ideas?”. Yes it was that sort of 0-0.
Anyway here’s my best effort at writing something interesting about last nights stalemate. There is no question a draw was a fair result all round. Both sides had little moments and periods on top, but neither did enough to win. Ultimately, I think both managers decided it was better not to lose than go for the win. Which was probably a good call.
I thought the atmosphere in the stadium was strange last night and, like the game, never really got going. Again, as a mirror of the game itself, I think both sets of fans became more nervous of losing than they were of pushing their team forward for the win.
Goalmouth incident and chances were hard to come by, but if the Forest fans backside twitched when that volley sat up for Harry Wilson in the second half, then Rams fans were certainly ready to use the facilities when Joe Lolley hit the bar. At the game I didn’t really appreciate it, but looking at replays it seems Derby had more than a shout for a pen on Lawrence. However both teams defended well and probably deserved the bits of luck you need to keep a clean sheet in the Championship.
There is no doubt Derby are starting to look more solid and less open than we have been and two consecutive clean sheets is a good habit. However both Mount and Bryson have not had anywhere near the influence they had before they were injured. Mount probably just needs a goal, but Bryson has been poor for a few games now and it is no surprise to see Derby starting to be linked with midfielders in January. Also after a little wobble, I have to give a shout out to Carson who was superb last night and has come back really strong in the last few weeks.
I appreciate this is starting to become a standard line in every post match piece at the moment, but whats going on with Waghorn? Is he not fit? Has he fell out with Frank? Surely a big Derby game like this is exactly when you want him involved?
Ultimately Forest are a decent side this year and will be in and around it until their inevitable meltdown and Karanka leaves. So lets take the positives and if we beat Brizzle on Saturday then the 2 points per game is achieved and its been a good week.
