9th – Wigan Away
Todays another ‘cheat day’ in Advent terms as I get a rest from my daily more creative posts and give you the lowdown on yesterdays ‘gritty’ 1-0 win at Wigan.
As you will see there were plenty of things in this game, good and bad, that we have seen before but a wins a wins a win!
Heres what went down.
For the majority of the first half, the Rams were excellent. With Mount and Bogle leading the charge and Huddz directing operations, we cut Wigan apart on numerous occasions. The football was quick, incisive and frankly too much for the Latics both before and after the sending off. However like Middlesbrough, we didn’t kill them off when we were on top, which was the root cause of the second half nerves.
The sending off was stonewall so nothing really to report there. Jack Marriott’s goal however was fantastic. A great switch of the play, a great ball in from Jayden and a superb controlled header by Marriott. Watch it back, the way he angles his body to direct the ball in the corner is brilliant. What a goalscorer he is.
You will probably have seen this back now on twitter but Wigan fans accusing Harry Wilson of cheating against the back drop of Sam Morsey’s antics is a bit like Hitler complaining about War Crimes. I’ve not come across this player before, but what a horrible wanker he is. First he claims a fake headbutt when Wilson is looking at his boots, then he hits the floor claiming something off the ball after running into Huddz on a throw in. Then he sprints to the ref to get Wilson sent off for diving after Harry has jumped straight up and is pretty much standing on the half way line. Prick.
That said, fair play to Wigan generally. Paul Cooks early double sub stemmed the tide and they really bossed the midfield second half, without really creating anything clear cut. Like Wednesday, the game management by Derby wasn’t great and what should have been a cruise ended up being a very nervy 45 minutes. Maybe they were wary of “doing a Stoke” and being caught, but we have the players to control games better and we need to start doing that in the second half of the season.
Of the Rams team, Keogh and Tomori were excellent and Bogle had his best game for a while, causing havoc in the first half and defending stoutly in the second. Mount started as though he really meant business and he is starting to look like his old self and Huddz was a beacon of class for the whole game. Aside from the goal it’s also worth saying Marriott ran his nuts off and was involved in some great link up play too, especially his clever pass that lead to the sending off.
Less positively, after my article yesterday, Lawrence had a bad day. Nothing came off for him at all and how he stayed on for the full 90 I don’t know. Bryson also wasn’t at his best struggling to get in the game and giving away numerous daft fouls. I am sure another central midfielder maybe starting to move up Franks list of priorities for January. Finally I don’t know what Waggy has to do to get on the pitch or in the team. A wet scrap at Wigan looked right up his street to me but Frank keeps bringing Zoon on who absolutely didn’t seem the right man for the job and actually dropped us in it a few times with simple poor decisions.
Anyway, as tough a watch as that second half was, a win, a clean sheet, three wins in four, two home games coming up. Can’t argue with that.
Come on you Rams!
